NOT FUN, KINDA SAD
I realize a lot of people come to my website to learn about the art of storytelling. In my reviews, I often talk about character development, story structure, direction, dialogue – and so on. But the ingredient that is the most important to any story, is the funness level, I rarely mention it. Yeah, I know what you’re saying, “Steve, there is no such word as funness.” Well, actually there is. I looked it up! Funness literally means, quality of fun. And unfortunately, I have to say that Guardians: Volume 3 was not as fun as the other two.
In fact, if you have animals, like I do, at the end of this movie, you just want to go home and hug them.
There are many reason why people go to movies. For me, I enjoy the movies because I want to escape reality. Mostly because, real life, work, and the news, is complicated. I don’t go to the movies to learn about life, or to find reflection. You know, I sometimes accidentally hear people talking about how movies have made them a better person, internally. That’s great if it effects that person in a positive way, But the critic in me is saying, “You really should be getting your life lessons from loved ones, or maybe try a therapist.” If you knew more about the backstory of the artist’s in the entertainment industry, they would be last ones, in real life, that you ever want to be inspired by.
So, back to the movie. The acting, the screenwriting, the directing, it was all good. All great. All – A+ perfect. It even made me laugh at times. But, it just wasn’t as fun as the others. It took itself a little too serious. Would I want to see it again? Probably not. Do I want to own it? Nope. For that reason, I have to give it an average rating.
